I think that social networks are a great window into student life. They are tools that enable you to find the right students to "engage" with...instead of ones that will just tell you what you want to hear.

Buzzwords can be organization killers, but they can also be fabulous tools that organizations can use to quickly get staff on the same page (using the same terminology) and to then be able to institute changes in services. I have seen too much positive energy out of the "Library 2.0" rhetoric to see that it has devalued anything yet.

Sure some will get lazy and hope that just instituting tools will be enough to catch them up to the future. But, others can use the concepts of "2.0" to really make a difference by revising their policies and procedures to create better, more relevant services. Without the discussion of "Web 2.0" this is MUCH harder.

[...] Jim Carroll blogged this on January 4th: Why “Bandwagon Innovation” Doesn’t Work. Carroll states very succinctly what is wrong with bandwagonny innovation ideas (including Web 2.0 ideas as they are commonly approached). He is a futurist whose primary interest is innovation; he is not generally speaking a technology critic. His points about innovation bandwagons have to do with their shallowness and facileness. His post was blogged on ACRLog on Monday, and a friend at work just showed it to me. [...]

[...] Innovation Bandwagons Once again, an unusually brief posting from me. ACRLog has something about the problem with “bandwagon innovation”. This issue resonates with me, actually. because I question the notion that libraries should jump on every technological trend and “paradigm shift.” There’s nothing wrong with innovation, but I’m not sure if these “quick fixes” provide the solutions we really seek.
Yeah. Isn't this why academic libraries on the whole aren't exactly huge innovators?
