TurnItIn vs. SafeAssignment

Seems there’s a nasty brouhaha developing in the plagiarism detection software market. I first came across this on the Blackboard administrator’s listserv, and then learned more from a blog that posted some detailed information. It seems that someone in TurnItIn’s management released a statement suggesting that a developer of MyDropBox (also known as SafeAssignment) had ties to term paper mills. That was followed by a lengthy message from SafeAssignment denying the charges. One doesn’t always find two competitors in the higher education market firing off charges at one another. For those academic librarians whose institutions have a subscription to either of these plagiarism detection services there may be greater interest in following this situation as it develops.
